Test Format and Administration

The ATS assessment is a web-based entrance exam that can be taken on any device, with an iPad/tablet being the recommended option for the best experience. Designed to look and feel like a storybook, the test engages young learners while measuring key academic skills.  It comes with a preset timer, which can be adjusted to fit your school’s specific needs. The assessment can be administered individually or in a group setting with an in-person proctor, and we also offer remote proctoring for out-of-town applicants.

Question Types

The ATS assessment features four multiple-choice sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Early Literacy, and Mathematics. Each question is read aloud to the student through headphones, allowing them to listen and select their best answer at their own pace. The number of questions per section varies by grade level—12 for Pre-K, 15 for Kindergarten, and 18 for 1st Grade. This structure ensures developmentally appropriate pacing and content while supporting independent test-taking for young learners.

  • Students take the assessment either in person or virtually, depending on the requirements of the school to which they are applying. This phase gathers essential performance data across all question types and sections.

  • All testing data is collected, sorted, and organized by a psychometrician. This step ensures that the dataset is clean, complete, and ready for in-depth review by the development team.

  • The team carefully analyzes the organized data to identify patterns, strengths, and potential areas for improvement within the test. Discussions focus on test validity, question performance, and student engagement indicators.

  • Based on recommendations from the psychometrician and the analysis phase, edits are made to content, images, and questions. This ensures the assessment remains accurate, age-appropriate, and aligned with learning goals.

  • The advisory team conducts a thorough review of the updated test to confirm that all changes have been implemented correctly. This final check ensures the assessment is polished, consistent, and ready for future administration.
